There are 3 Types of Fractions in Mathematics:

1.  Proper Fractions

2.  Improper Fractions

3.  Mixed Fractions

Proper Fractions

Proper Fractions are fractions whose numerator or top number is smaller than the denominator or number on the bottom of the fraction.

Examples of these are:

1            2            3            5           7

__        __          __         ___        __

2            3           5            6            8

As you can see from the 5 examples above, the numerators or numbers on top of each fraction above is smaller than the numbers below each fraction listed above.

These are called: Proper Fractions

Improper Fractions:

Improper Fractions are fractions where the denominator or number on the bottom of the fraction is smaller than the numerator or number at the top of the fraction.

Examples of these are:

9      8      7     5      3

_      _      _     _      _

8      7      6     3      2

The numbers at the top of each fraction listed above are all greater than the numbers at the bottom of each fraction.

These are called: Improper Fractions

Mixed Fractions:

Mixed Fractions are fractions which consists of a proper fraction plus a whole number.

Examples of Mixed Fractions are: From the above fraction you can see that each fraction has a whole number plus a proper fraction. This kind of fraction is called a Mixed Fraction.
